PuraVida Showcase presents Chilean pop princess Francisca Valenzuela with Gang of Brothers and Brazilian, Jazz – Funk trio, Abuka.
Francisca Valenzuela’s star has been on the rise in the Chilean music scene since age 12, when she arrived from San Francisco and her first song hit the airwaves. The 25 year old über-talented singer, classically-trained pianist, and published poet/author is considered one of the most glamorous artistes in modern Latin Pop.
The indie chanteuse’s sassy, piano-driven pop/rock is reminiscent of Tori Amos and her smoky voice echoes Fiona Apple and Mexico’s Julieta Venegas. Her songs gather elements from everything from jazz to rock and pop to classical music. Her poetic lyrics cover social and political issues, personal stories, intimate reflections, humor and love stories.
Valenzuela’s breakthrough album, Muérdete La Lengua (Bite Your Tongue) was listed by Rolling Stone Chile as number 16 in its 50 best albums of 2007; American Latino TV awarded Francisca the 2009 ‘Favorite Latino TV Newcomer Award’; her 5 singles rotated on MTV. Breaking onto the world stage in 2011 with the outstanding follow up album Buen Soldado (Good Soldier), she has since performed at Shakira’s Popfest, Lolapalooza Chile, Cannes Film Festival, LAMC Festival in NYC, World Expo Shanghai and has been invited to sing on stage with Bono and U2.
With her soulful sensibility and killer piano skills, Valenzuela will perform a special intimate acoustic set and a set accompanied by deeply funky and seriously phat, Gang of Brothers.

PuraVida Showcase presents pioneering Afro-Peruvian dub-tronic groove collective Novalima and Brasilia’s hottest live DJ crew Criolina.
Novalima’s ‘new world’ blend of traditional Afro-Peruvian rhythms and melodies with the cutting edge grooves of dub reggae, chilled-out electronica and funky Latin beats has mesmerised audiences all over the planet. Founded by four friends from Lima, Novalima’s passion for traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture has been credited as bringing, ‘the spirit and soul of Peruvian blues into the 21st century’.
Following the global success of their second studio album Afro (2006) and the Latin Grammy nominated Coba Coba (reaching #1 in the European World Music Charts), Novalima are now touring their acclaimed 4th album, titled Karimba. On this, their first tour of Australia, Novalima will perform songs from all three ground-breaking albums.
From São Paulo to Paris, DJs Oops, Pezao & Barata (A.K.A Criolina) have taken world dance floors by storm with their infectious live Brazilian beats and spun grooves. Opening for some of biggest names in Latin music including: Gilberto Gil, Manu Chao and Seu Jorge, Criolina have carved out a reputation as one of Brazil’s hottest club music exports.

PuraVida Showcase presents frenetic Colombian funk trio Malalma and Novalima’s DJ Duo- Coba Sound System jamming with musicians from Watussi and dance funksters Tribalismo & DJ Dante Rivera.
Malalma are known as the “space cowboys” of Bogotá. Exuberant, electric and explosive, they describe their sound as Tropical Acid Latin Trip – a fusion of electronica with funk, salsa, hip-hop and Afro – Colombian roots. Think George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic with a Latin vibe!
The trio made up of Mauricio Montenegro (drums), Ivan Ortega (synths) and Sergio Arias (vocals & drum machines) have been featured in Mexico’s Vive Latino, London’s Colombiage as well as Latin America’s biggest outdoor free festival, Rock al Parque. On the back of a European and US tour, Malalma finaly hits Australian shores, touring their new album Acidtopico.
Coba Soundsystem features DJs Ramon & Rafael M from the Latin Grammy-nominated Afro-Peruvian supergroup Novalima. They specialise in a cross-pollination of world sounds and electronica, blending tropical house, dub and Afro-Latin beats. Coba Soundsystem will jam with members of Sydney’s very own Latino-tinged roots rockers, Watussi and of one of the hottest tribal funk & dance outfits, Tribalismo plus DJ Dante Rivera.
